The target you bought in spring is losing stopping performance on a curve nobody is plotting. Doing nothing is four unexamined assumptions, and each fails without a warning shot.

Read the NFAA's footnote before treating 25 yards as generous: that figure was formulated in the recurve era, and the association now says more is better. Modern compounds at 55 to 70 pounds of draw throw 400 to 500 grain arrows at 270 to 320 feet per second. One sentence there belongs on your site plan: in no case should an errant arrow cross the range boundary, even if the adjoining property is uninhabited.

Check the local rules first, because a private yard is not an exemption

Map every route into the range, not just the shooting lane

Target-distance advice trains people to measure forward. The damage happens sideways and behind.

Walk the whole envelope and mark on paper every way a person or animal enters it: the side gate, the alley, the gap in the hedge where the neighbor's dog comes through, the path your household takes to the compost bin. The NFAA's catalogue of failures on new ranges includes waiting positions inside the danger zone of the preceding target, a path directly behind a butt, and uncleared brush that raises ricochet risk. People will miss, the guidelines note, and they will go looking.

One entry has no backyard equivalent worth risking: a non-backstopped target on the brow of a hill, where a missed shot becomes a flight shot. If your ground falls away behind the target, the miss does not land at 40 yards. And if any part of the envelope crosses a line you do not control, you have not found a smaller range. You have found a range that does not fit.

Why no backstop material is a containment guarantee

Almost every build tutorial rests on one claim: pick the right material and every arrow stops. Arrow energy, impact angle, accumulated wear, gaps between panels, and the miss that never touches the target defeat any material-only promise. Kinetic energy in foot-pounds equals arrow weight in grains times velocity squared divided by 450,240, the formula Wasp Archery publishes. A 400-grain arrow at 290 feet per second carries about 74.7 foot-pounds; one leaving at 350 fps starts near 104 and holds roughly 87 at 50 yards, all through a point a few millimeters across.

Manufacturer ratings are the only stopping numbers with a test behind them, and they are stated in arrow speed rather than draw weight. Morrell rates the Yellow Jacket YJ-425 to 425 feet per second and the YJ-450 Plus to 450 and beyond. Both are field-point targets. The broadhead-rated models in the same line sit lower, with the Broadhead Crossbow Target and the Dual Threat 350 rated to 350 fps. Read that pairing twice: the point that does the most damage is the one the faster bags are not built to take.

I do not shoot. My working life is watching a published specification fail to describe an outcome. Thirteen seasons of frame strips have taught me that a shoe's stack height, drop and foam compound say little about what a foot does at mile 22: the spec describes a bench, the race describes tens of thousands of loaded compressions. A stopping rating is that kind of number: true about a new target, struck square, by the tested point.

Netting is weaker still. The Archery Trade Association recommends it only for bows under 30 pounds of draw, hung loose three feet beyond the target, and suppliers call it a screen rather than a barrier.

For the solid backstop, the NFAA rule of thumb is three butt-widths wide by two butt-heights high: behind a four-by-four-foot butt, a screen 12 feet wide and 8 feet high, or three 4-by-8-foot panels of half-inch exterior-grade plywood. Notice how the requirement is written. The backstop must decelerate the arrow to zero without substantial damage to the arrow and without endangering anyone on or off the range. That is a performance standard wearing a material's clothes, and it is phrased that way because informal tests report half-inch plywood defeated by a 55-pound bow at 10 yards, the arrow carrying another three and a half inches into the backing. Run the shooting process the way a supervised range runs it

The NFAA by-laws add a rule most backyard shooters have never heard: no archer draws in any manner that, on an accidental release, could send the arrow beyond the safety zone, backstop or overshoot area. That prohibits the sky-draw.

Household rules do the rest. One person shoots at a time. Nobody walks downrange until every bow is down and the line is called clear. Equipment lives locked away, not leaning in the garage where a visiting eleven-year-old finds it. Dogs go in before the first arrow.

Inspect the target and arrows on a schedule, not on a feeling

A target degrades continuously and quietly, and familiarity hides it. Morrell's maintenance guidance names the mechanism: rotate placement so impacts do not concentrate, limit weather exposure on targets not rated for outdoor use, and check for core compaction, because a firmer or uneven feel in one area means stopping performance is already declining. A replacement cover does not repair a shot-out core; it produces a good-looking target with a soft center. The National Archery in the Schools Program tells instructors to rotate the target every few arrows.

Why people miss the drift is perceptual, and this is the part I can speak to from my own work. My unpopular position in running coverage is that athletes should watch fewer slow-motion clips, because daily footage of your own gait is close to useless for detecting gait change. Week to week, everything looks like last week. I catch shoe changes and late-race posture shifts by setting frame strips from March against September, never by comparing Tuesday with Monday. A target you shoot four evenings a week is a Tuesday-against-Monday problem, and the first honest signal is a pass-through.

NFAA-chartered clubs with field ranges are re-inspected every two years. Nothing schedules an inspection in a backyard, so schedule one. Before each session, press the face for soft spots, check the seams for escaping filling, and look at the shafts for cracks. Retire a target when the center stops resisting like the edges; that judgment is mine rather than a published standard, and your manufacturer's sheet overrides it.

What your homeowners policy actually pays

Personal liability, Coverage E on a standard homeowners policy, commonly starts at $100,000. The Insurance Information Institute notes that limits often begin near that figure; carriers now default higher, with $300,000 the most common and $100,000 to $500,000 the usual band. Coverage F, medical payments to others, pays roughly $1,000 to $5,000 of a guest's bills with no fault determination. Set those against a penetrating injury involving surgery and long-term disability, and $100,000 is a deductible you pay the rest of. Coverage E responds only where you are legally negligent, and shooting outside a local ordinance sits close to a definition of negligence. Some policies exclude weapons or particular recreational uses. Only the written policy decides, so call the carrier, describe the setup including draw weight and lot size, and ask for the answer in writing.

Choose the range whenever the envelope does not fit, whenever the code says no, and whenever you cannot keep people and animals out of the ground behind the target. The credentialing is real: USA Archery's Level 1 Instructor certification requires age 15 or over, current membership, a four-hour online course with a 75 percent passing exam, and an in-person practical run by a certified Instructor Trainer. Where a range officer has to step over and help an archer with nobody else on duty, the line shuts down.
