How Many Laps Is a Mile? Four Laps Plus Nine Metres
A mile is 4.02336 laps of a standard 400-metre track, run in lane one. Four laps covers exactly 1,600 metres, and a statute mile is 1,609.344 metres, so a full mile is four laps plus 9.344 metres — about 30 feet 8 inches. In a 25-yard pool, a mile is 70.4 lengths. Where the figure 1,609.344 metres comes from
Six countries signed the International Yard and Pound Agreement on 1 July 1959: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. The agreement fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 metres. A statute mile is 1,760 yards, and 1,760 × 0.9144 gives 1,609.344 metres with nothing rounded anywhere in the chain. The US National Bureau of Standards, the agency that became NIST, adopted the new value effective the same day; the Federal Register notice ran on 25 June 1959.
That exactness is worth holding onto, because it is the reason every lap figure below terminates cleanly instead of drifting.
One loose end survived until recently. The United States kept an older survey mile for land data, built on the 1893 yard of 3600/3937 metre, running roughly 3.2 millimetres longer than the international mile. NIST and NOAA's National Geodetic Survey deprecated the US survey foot on 31 December 2022, in a final determination published in the Federal Register on 5 October 2020. Since 1 January 2023 the international foot of exactly 0.3048 metre is the only one in play for new work. No runner was ever affected by 3.2 millimetres. I raise it because it explains why two slightly different mile figures still appear in older documents, and someone always finds one and assumes the track figure is wrong.
The phrase to carry: four laps plus nine
Nobody holds 4.02336 in their head at the end of a hard interval. Four laps plus nine, they hold.
The nine is 9.344 metres, and the direction you round it matters more than the decimal. Round the nine down to zero and you finish 9.344 metres short of the distance you told yourself you ran. Round it up to ten and you overshoot by 656 millimetres. One of those errors costs you nothing.
I test phrase cards the way the public-signage desk taught me: read the card out loud in the state the reader will actually be in, not at the desk where it was written. That rule is the whole job. A card that only works for a calm reader with spare time has not been tested, it has been admired. It is late enough now that the street outside has finally emptied and I can hear my own breathing, which is the nearest I get at this hour to the condition this particular card has to survive. Four laps plus nine survives it. Four point oh two three three six does not.
If the nine metres matters to you, here is how to cover it:
- Look for the mile start line. Many tracks paint one roughly nine metres before the common finish line, specifically so a mile can be run on a metric oval. Some tracks have it, plenty do not.
- Step back 9.344 metres if there is no line. That is roughly a dozen ordinary walking steps, though that conversion is my own rough estimate from an average stride, not a standard. A tape measure or a cone removes the guesswork.
- Run four laps in lane one and finish at the common finish line. Four laps from the offset start puts you at 1,609.344 metres.
Which lane you run in changes the answer completely
World Athletics measures lane one along a line 30 centimetres out from the kerb. Every other lane is measured 20 centimetres out from the outer edge of its inner line. That mismatch of 30 against 20 is why the step from lane one to lane two adds 7.04 metres, while every step after that adds 7.66. Both figures come from the Track and Field Facilities Manual, whose staggered-start table for the 400-metre standard track is the same document meet officials use to paint the lines.
The 30 centimetres is not arbitrary. The manual builds lane one from two straights of 84.39 metres and two semicircular bends whose measuring radius is 36.80 metres, of which 36.50 is the inside line and the remaining 0.30 is the allowance for a runner's body swinging wide of the kerb rather than scraping it. Put those into 2 × 84.39 + 2π × 36.80 and the total lands on 400.00 metres to the centimetre. The lap is engineered to be round; the mile is what refuses to cooperate.

Read the third and fourth columns together and the four-lap rule stops being a rule. In lane one, four laps falls 9.344 metres short of a mile. In lane two, the same four laps overshoots it by 18.82 metres. The rule is wrong in both directions within one lane of each other, which is the part almost nobody expects.
Out in lane eight, a mile is 3.55 laps, and four laps there covers 1,812.12 metres — 202.78 metres past the mile, most of a further half-lap.
A caution on the table: it assumes the World Athletics lane width of 1.22 metres. Many American high-school tracks were built with 42-inch lanes, about 1.0668 metres, which makes their outer lanes shorter than the figures above. I have not measured one myself and would not publish a number I had not seen sourced. If your session depends on outer-lane distance, the facility manager holds the as-built drawing, and that drawing outranks any table on the internet, including this one.
The 1,600 metres is where the four-lap habit came from
The 1,600-metre race is exactly four laps of lane one. It sits 9.344 metres under a mile, which is close enough that the two names have been used interchangeably for four decades, and far enough that the records are kept separately.
American high schools race the 1,600 under National Federation of State High School Associations rules. Published accounts date the switch — from the 1,760-yard mile on 440-yard ovals to the metric distance on 400-metre ovals — to the 1980 rule book. I am reporting that date from secondary sources rather than from the 1980 book itself. The same arithmetic scales up: the 3,200-metre race is 18.688 metres short of two miles.
Internationally the phrase "metric mile" points somewhere else entirely, at the 1,500 metres, which is three laps plus 300 metres.
Converting between them is straightforward. Multiply a 1,600 time by 1.00584, the ratio of 1,609.344 to 1,600, and a 5:00 flat becomes about 5:01.8 for the full mile. That is a distance conversion and nothing more. Whether a runner would actually hold that pace for the extra nine metres is a coaching question, and coaches own it.
This is precisely where a track and a treadmill part company. The track hands you a repeated unit and no display, so you convert laps into distance in your head. A treadmill hands you a display and no unit: it counts belt revolutions, multiplies by the belt length, and reports the distance directly, so there is nothing to convert and no lap to count. The four-lap rule exists because of that gap, and it exists nowhere else.
Treadmill numbers depend on calibration. ISO 20957-6:2021 sorts treadmills into accuracy classes A, B and C for display accuracy; the numeric tolerances live inside the purchased standard, which I have not read and will not paraphrase from summaries. What is not in doubt is the mechanism. A stretched belt changes the distance per revolution, and manufacturers commonly advise recalibration every six to twelve months.
How many lengths make a mile in a pool
World Aquatics recognises two racing courses in its Facilities Rules: long course at 50.00 metres and short course at 25.00 metres, each held to a tolerance of +0.010 and −0.000 metre. The United States adds a third that the international rules do not use for championships: the 25-yard course, 22.86 metres, which is the standard for NCAA competition and most American short-course meets.

The fourth column rounds up every time, for the same reason the nine metres on the track rounds up. A fraction of a length rounded down is a fraction of a mile you did not swim, and there is no version of this where the extra length is the problem.
The two short courses look almost identical from the deck and are not. A 25-metre pool is 2.14 metres longer than a 25-yard pool, which sounds like nothing until you count it out over a mile: 64.37 lengths against 70.4, a difference of six full lengths for the same distance swum. A swimmer who learned the count in one pool and carries it into the other will be six lengths wrong, and the number on the wall clock will not flag the error.
The word "lap" is the real trouble in a pool, and the rule book settles it. USA Swimming counts lengths: a lap counter for the 500, 1000 and 1650 calls lengths, and the warning signal in distance freestyle sounds when the leader has two lengths plus five yards to go. One length is one traversal of the course. Pool-deck habit says a lap is down and back, two lengths, and half the swimmers in any lane are using each definition. When it matters, say lengths and the ambiguity disappears.
The swimmer's mile is not a mile
The 1,650-yard freestyle is 66 lengths of a 25-yard pool, or 1,508.76 metres. Swimmers call it the mile. U.S. Masters Swimming puts it 110 yards short of a statute mile, 6.25 per cent under. The 1,500, which is 30 lengths of a 50-metre pool, is 109.344 metres short, 6.8 per cent under, and gets called the mile too.
Neither name is an error so much as an inheritance. The 1,650 came in as the closest yard-pool equivalent of the 1,500, and the label from the older 1,760-yard event stayed attached to it.
For a swimmer, the practical gap is five lengths. Finish the 1,650 in a 25-yard pool and you are 4.4 lengths short of a statute mile; swim 71 and you have cleared it. Open-water events and GPS watches each carry their own argument about what counts as the distance, and neither one changes the pool figures above.
When the posted lap count is the only number you have
Gym loops, hotel tracks and elevated indoor circuits usually post a laps-per-mile sign, and the arithmetic to check it is one division: 1,609.344 divided by the loop length in metres. A sign claiming 30 laps to a mile is describing a loop of 53.64 metres, or 58.67 yards. A World Athletics standard indoor track is 200 metres in lane one, which makes a mile there 8.05 laps.
What the sign never tells you is where its number came from. A measuring wheel run along the actual running line produces one figure; a number copied from a builder's brochure and never checked against the finished floor produces another. Both get printed in the same typeface at the same height on the same wall.
So ask. The facility manager knows which one is on that sign, and if the answer is a shrug, treat the count as an estimate and use the division above against a length you measured yourself.
