Can Cats Get a Cold? The Failure Modes That Count
Yes, cats can get a cold in the household sense: a feline upper respiratory infection that produces sneezing, nasal discharge, and watery eyes. They do not catch a human rhinovirus cold. VCA Animal Hospitals attributes about 90 percent of feline URIs to feline herpesvirus type-1 and feline calicivirus. Gao and colleagues, in Veterinary Sciences in January 2023, put that pair at 80 to 90 percent of upper respiratory disease. The Merck Veterinary Manual, updated November 2024, gives milder cases 5 to 10 days and severe cases as long as 6 weeks. VCA puts uncomplicated illness at 7 to 14 days after a 2- to 10-day incubation, sometimes 21 days. The viruses spread cat to cat in saliva and in eye and nose secretions, and on bowls, litter, toys, and bedding. They do not infect people.
I spent my shifts in a stock factory quality lab putting forty-tonne batches against a spec sheet: gelatin, salt, glutamate, the brown off hard-roasted bones. A sauce that coated a spoon and missed the sheet went down the drain. I read a sneezing cat the same way. The household word is cold. The sheet is feline URI. The failure modes are a borrowed human clock, a borrowed medicine cabinet, and a sneeze count with no units. I am not a veterinarian. How a clinic stabilises a dehydrated kitten is a bench that was never mine. I can name the numbers.
Why does a human common cold make a bad spec sheet for a cat?
The CDC page on the common cold, February 19, 2026, says colds usually last less than a week, that adults in the United States average two to three colds a year, and that rhinoviruses are the most frequent cause. Symptoms often peak within 2 to 3 days. The rhinovirus page says illness often lasts less than 7 days and can last up to 2 weeks. That sheet does not transfer onto a cat.
Merck is blunt: feline viral rhinotracheitis virus and caliciviruses are host-specific and pose no known human risk. Human conjunctivitis caused by the feline chlamydial agent has been reported. VCA adds that Bordetella bronchiseptica can, in certain circumstances, cause illness in people with immune-system disease, and that isolated household conjunctivitis has been linked to Chlamydia felis. Those exceptions are rare. They are not a rhinovirus on the sofa.

A human cold ends. A feline herpesvirus URI can go quiet and reprint itself when the cat is boarded, moved, or sick with something else. Treating the reprint as a new household bug is the first failure mode. The virus was already in the cat.
What causes a cat cold in the first place?
Cat cold symptoms come from infection of the nose, sinuses, throat, and sometimes the eyes and mouth. VCA lists feline herpesvirus type-1 and feline calicivirus as the usual viruses, and Bordetella bronchiseptica and Chlamydia felis as the usual bacteria. Mycoplasma and feline reovirus appear less often. Gao's Wuhan series of 1,158 hospital cats with respiratory signs (2019–2022) found calicivirus in 40.2 percent, Mycoplasma felis in 26.9 percent, herpesvirus in 15.5 percent, and Chlamydia felis in 7.3 percent. That mix is one city's caseload. It does not cancel VCA's 90 percent figure for the two viruses in general feline URI.
The European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases guideline for feline herpesvirus, updated May 14, 2026, says shedding starts as soon as 24 hours after infection and lasts one to three weeks. Signs usually appear two to six days after experimental infection. VCA: FVR survives less than 18 hours outside the host; calicivirus may live up to 10 days. Dilute bleach destroys both.
Merck's etiology is aerosol droplets and fomites carried by a handler. UW–Madison Shelter Medicine, updated April 2, 2026, shortens the folklore: droplets over 5 feet or less, fomites, and, for herpes, reactivation under stress. Whole-house aerosol is weak.
Causes cluster. Overcrowding, a new cat, boarding, surgery, a move, and a shared bowl are the same class of failure: the cat meets virus, or latent virus meets cortisol. Indoor-only is not a sterile field. VCA: wash hands before and after petting another cat, and isolate a new arrival for at least 1 to 2 weeks.
Which measurements tell you the batch is going off spec?
Sneezing is the label people watch. It is a poor single assay. Merck opens with fever, frequent sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, and salivation. The fever may reach 105°F (40.5°C) and then fluctuate from normal to 103°F (39°C). "Frequent" is the word for sneezes. There is no daily sneeze total.
Maddie's Fund Kitten and Cat URI Scoring Chart grades infrequent / frequent / constant by wall marks, and puts emergency on breathing, temperature, and appetite. If a page hands you "more than five sneezes a day" as a veterinary standard, ask which agency printed it. I have not found that number on Merck, VCA, Cornell, AAHA, or ABCD.

Skip any one of those and the log lies. Clinic 16–40 and home 15–30 answer different questions; I prefer Cornell's home ceiling. A twice-fed adult that eats 0 of 2 meals has already crossed 24 hours. After boarding, the stress clock started at drop-off.
A bright adult eating both meals, drinking, and breathing 22 quiet breaths a minute at rest can be nursed at home. A kitten that skips both meals, or any cat whose resting rate sits above Cornell's 35, is not a home-care candidate.
How do you count a resting respiratory rate at home?
PDSA's public how-to is the procedure I would post on a fridge.
- Wait until the cat is relaxed and resting, or sleeping but not dreaming.
- Stay far enough back that you do not make the cat sit up.
- Watch the chest or flank. One rise and fall is one breath.
- Count the breaths in 15 seconds, then multiply by four. Time a full minute if you prefer.
- Write the number next to today's meal count, water, and, if you took it, rectal temperature.
Do the count at true rest. Play, heat, a clinic visit, and a hard purr all raise the number. Cornell's 15 to 30 band and the "call above 35" line are for that resting number. Merck's 16 to 40 is a physiology table from Dukes. I prefer the Cornell home ceiling. Open-mouth breathing, belly effort, blue or grey gums, or a rate that will not come down at rest is an emergency clinic, not a steamy bathroom.
What home care stays on spec, and what fails?
Do cat colds go away on their own? Many uncomplicated viral cases in healthy adults do. Merck calls the complex usually self-limiting, with generally low mortality. VCA says most cats with an uncomplicated infection can be treated at home. PetMD, updated May 31, 2024, gives healthy cats 7 to 10 days with supportive care. That sentence holds for the mild adult.
What to do if your cat has a cold, if the log is still inside spec, is VCA's home list. Sit in a steamy bathroom for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day. Wipe face and eyes so discharge does not crust. Offer palatable canned food, because a blocked nose cuts smell. Eye medication appears when discharge is purulent. Antibiotics appear for bacterial infection, especially in kittens. Viral infection does not respond to antibacterial drugs. Famciclovir is sometimes prescribed for herpes. Fluids and assisted feeding are for the dehydrated or severe case.
How to treat a cat cold at home does not include the human cold cabinet. PetMD: never give over-the-counter cold medication unless a veterinarian specifically recommends it. Many human cold medicines are toxic to cats. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a named feline poison on PetMD's toxicology page. Ibuprofen belongs in the same refuse pile.
Lysine is the other borrowed spec. Merck's 2024 treatment section still lists 250 mg by mouth two to three times a day. Bol and Bunnik's 2015 systematic review in BMC Veterinary Research recommended an immediate stop: lysine is not effective for prevention or treatment of FHV-1. A 2008 Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery shelter trial found 37 percent URI in 144 lysine-treated cats and 34 percent in 147 untreated cats. I cannot tell you how a commercial base is stabilised; that bench was not mine. Two sheets disagree. I would not add lysine unless the veterinarian looking at the cat still wants it.
VCA names surgery, other illness, changes in the home, and boarding as reactivation triggers. A quiet room and a box to hide in are not a cure.
Why does a cat cold return a week after boarding?
The reprint is the herpes failure mode, and it has a clock.
Gaskell and Povey moved recovered cats. Virus came back after a mean 7.2 days. Corticosteroid stress produced the same mean lag, range 4 to 11 days, in 22 of 32 cats (69 percent). Rehousing was milder: 4 of 22 cats (18 percent). At least 27 of 33 recovered cats (82 percent) were carriers. VCA's round number, about 80 percent chronic FVR carriers, sits on that pile. ABCD, citing Pedersen 2004, gives the shelter version: 4 percent shedding on the way in, 50 percent after one week. Contreras and colleagues, Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine 2018, restated the field rule: reactivation within the first 3 weeks, lag about 4 to 11 days.
If the cat left the cattery on Saturday and sneezed the next Friday, the sheet says latency plus stress. VCA: about half of calicivirus-infected cats become carriers; some for months, a small percentage for life, often without signs, still shedding. A cat with acute URI is infective during incubation and for up to three weeks after signs appear. Isolate a new cat 1 to 2 weeks. A booster at least two weeks before a planned board, on VCA's herpes page, does not make the cat sterile. It is supposed to shorten and soften the episode.
Age changes the cost of a miss. Merck: young or very old cats are most susceptible; brachycephalic breeds run a higher risk of chronic disease. Gao's series is a warning: 75.2 percent of those URI cases were under 12 months. An 8- to 12-week kitten with calicivirus can show Merck's limping syndrome, fever and shifting-leg lameness, sometimes even in vaccinated kittens. That kitten does not get the adult wait.
Cat cold symptoms, causes, treatment, recovery: herpes recovery is often latency. Write the date of the last board on the same card as the breath count. The sneeze is the signal to read it.
